Advice for an Eighteen-year-old Girl Entering College...

Eighteen is an exciting age. You have just grown up but yet to become a mature young lady. The joy of freedom and umpteen choices dance before you. Is anyone still pulling your puppet strings? Yes, who else but big dad and big mom? But do listen to their wise ramblings about no-no’s such as late nights and pre-marital sex. Read the book “Doctors” by Erich Segal to know the power and length of platonic friendships and how meaningful it can eventually turn into!

Exercise daily and learn different forms and types of exercise. Yoga, aerobics, and calisthenics will energize you. Make workouts a part of your life. Just as you bathe daily to keep your skin clean, exercise daily to keep your body and mind clean. Also learn to forgive and forget daily. It cleans your soul. Mean it when you say, “And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.”

Are you climbing mountains and dancing below waterfalls? Have you joined a fun club in college? Do you peep into Facebook and tweet about the child prodigy Adora Svitak and her book the Flying Fingers? Are you regularly borrowing books from your college library? Did you learn to skate and also knit?  Have you invited friends for a buffet lunch cooked all by yourself? Please do all this when you are in late teens. But don’t rash drive a car or a horse.

Love is a magic word and beware of the young man who talks to you about it. Is he genuine or is he triggering you to have fun? Has he made a bet with his friends with your love as his pawn? Is he a cad or dad, you never know. Just entertain yourself with his song and dance sequence for "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For U". Watch out before you walk out with him.

Surround yourself with friends of all shades, shapes, and sizes.Stay away from all type of politics and junk food. You are too young for that rot or riot!Life is a verb - so sing, dance, play, run, jump, skate, swim, meditate, read, think, love, and pray!
